Britain's first "smart" jail, with no bars on windows and smart technology, opened on Friday.

London, March 4 (PTI) Britain's first "smart" jail, with no bars on windows and smart technology, opened on Friday, in a programme aimed at reducing crime and putting more criminals to work.

The UK has inaugurated the world's first "smart" jail, which uses cutting-edge technology and has no bars on the windows to prevent crime and reoffending. Cells at Her Majesty's Prison (HMP) Five Wells will be referred to as "rooms," while convicts will be referred to as "residents." According to the government, the 1,700-capacity jail was created with education, training, and jobs for inmates upon release as its primary goals.

As part of the rehabilitation process, prison personnel at Her Majesty's Prison (HMP) Five Wells in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, central England, will refer to cells as "rooms" and convicts as "residents."

In addition to a gym, a snooker table, a table tennis table, and a computer tablet, the 1,700-capacity jail will have a gym, a snooker table, a table tennis table, and a computer tablet to assist inmates obtain new certifications.

The UK's Department of Justice (DoJ) claims it is the country's first jail established with education, training, and jobs for inmates upon release as its key goals - characteristics that have been shown to reduce crime and reoffending.

"HMP Five Wells is a shining example of this government's strategy to build safe and contemporary jails that reduce crime and protect the public," UK Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab stated.

"This smart jail is meant to tackle the fundamental challenges to decreasing reoffending and keeping our streets safer, from drug-recovery centres that use abstinence-based therapy to world-class prisoner training courses," he added.

Since May 2019, the new jail has been under construction, with the first convicts or "residents" arriving last month. Offenders are housed in X-shaped blocks with larger, shorter hallways and fewer convicts on each wing, allowing prison personnel to immediately observe all cells and offenders at any given moment. According to the Department of Justice, cells will feature ultra-secure, bar-less windows to prevent drones from delivering illegal substances, phones, and weapons inside jails.

"Prisoners will have in-cell tablets to access education and learning from inside their cell," the Department of Justice said. "They will be outfitted with stringent and robust security to ensure they are not abused, and cutting-edge body scanners will prevent contraband from wreaking havoc on the wings."

According to the government, it is working in direct cooperation with local companies to provide 500 on-the-job training positions to ex-offenders who are released on a temporary licence, resulting in ready-to-work jobs when they return to the community. Over 25 ex-offenders and temporary release inmates worked on the jail's construction, acquiring skills including bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, and roofing.

In disciplines such as coding, automobile maintenance, fork-lift truck maintenance, plumbing, and engineering, inmates will participate in formal learning, courses, qualifications, and on-the-job training in 24 workshops and a huge number of classrooms.

With two dedicated drug treatment wings focusing on abstinence-based techniques, the jail will be sophisticated in how it assists convicts with drug addictions into clean life. A 16-week programme for up to 200 offenders with substance abuse difficulties will help them get off drugs and into long-term rehabilitation.

The new jail, which is being built on the site of the former HMP Wellingborough, is the first of six new prisons to be built, with another in Glen Parva, Leicestershire, already under development.

The Department of Justice intends to generate thousands of employment for local communities and spend millions in local roads and infrastructure as part of the GBP 4 billion investment, while also rehabilitating thousands of criminals and keeping the public safe.
