After invading Ukraine, Russia becomes the world's most sanctioned country.

Sanctions are being imposed on Russia by countries all around the world in an effort to stop it from invading Ukraine. According to Castellum, a New York-based sanctions tracking site, Russia has now become the world's most sanctioned country. AI

According to the BBC, which cites Castellum.AI, Russia's total now outnumbers Iran's 3,616 sanctions, removing Tehran from first place.

The US and its allies slapped sanctions on Russia for the first time on February 22, a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the two Ukrainian rebel territories of Donetsk and Luhansk to be "independent nations," according to the site.

It went on to say that 2,754 sanctions were already in place against Russia before the assault on February 22 and that 2,778 more were applied in the days thereafter, bringing the total to 5,532.

Switzerland (568), the European Union (518), Canada (454), Australia (413), the United States (243), the United Kingdom (35) and Japan are among the nations and areas sanctioning Russia, according to the site (35).

Here is a list of the top five countries with the most sanctions:

Russia is subject to 5,532 sanctions as a result of its invasion of Ukraine.

Iran is ranked second, with 3,616 sanctions imposed as a result of its disputed nuclear programme and alleged support for terrorism.

Syria: According to the Castellum.ai list, Syria is subject to 2,608 sanctions. The European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Switzerland have all implemented economic sanctions as a result of the civil conflict.

North Korea has been sanctioned by the United Nations since 2006 because of its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. North Korea is subject to 2,077 sanctions.

Venezuela: According to the Castellum.ai list, the South American country is subject to 651 sanctions.

According to the worldwide sanctions tracking website Castellum.ai, Moscow has received 2,778 fresh penalties in just under two weeks since Russian President Vladimir Putin sent soldiers into Ukraine, raising the total to 5,532.

Iran has been sanctioned 3,616 times, while Syria and North Korea have been sanctioned 2,608 and 2,077 times, respectively.

Venezuela, Myanmar, and Cuba are among the most sanctioned nations in the world, with 651 sanctions, 510 sanctions, and 208 sanctions, respectively.

Switzerland has imposed the majority of sanctions.

Switzerland, with 568 sanctions on Russia, is the country with the most.

The European Union comes in second with 518 sanctions, followed by France with 512, Canada with 454, and Australia with 413. So far, the US has placed 243 sanctions on Russia.

The sanctions target 2,427 people, 343 organisations, six ships, and two planes.

'War declaration' is a phrase used to describe a formal declaration of war.

On Saturday, Putin compared Western sanctions on Russia to a "declaration of war."

Russia's assault on Ukraine, which began on February 24, has sparked worldwide censure, financial penalties, and an exodus of multinational companies from the country.

The West has also implemented stringent export controls on vital technology that can no longer be delivered to Russia.

According to UN data, at least 406 people have been killed and 801 others have been injured in Ukraine since the conflict began. However, the international agency has stated that the real number of civilian casualties is "impossible to establish" because to the situation on the ground.

According to the UN refugee agency, more than 1.7 million people have fled to neighbouring nations.

According to Castellum, there are now more sanctions against Russia than there are against Iran, Venezuela, Myanmar, and Cuba combined.

Starting February 22, Russia became the target of 2,778 fresh sanctions designations, raising the total number of penalties against Russia to more than 5,530. Over the course of a decade, Iran has faced 3,616 sanctions, the majority of which have been imposed because of its nuclear programme and support for terrorism.

Before February 22, Russia was subjected to 2,754 sanctions, making it the world's second-most sanctioned country behind Iran. However, sanctions against Russia have increased to 5,532 after President Vladimir Putin sent troops into eastern Ukraine on February 21.

According to Bloomberg, Iran has suffered 3,616 sanctions, largely for its nuclear programme and support for terrorism. Syria and North Korea are just behind Iran, with 2,608 and 2,077 sanctions imposed on them, respectively.

The penalties come from the United States and its Western partners, who have shown remarkable unanimity in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Switzerland, which has a long history of neutrality, tops other nations in the number of sanctions it has pushed against Russia, with 568. France, Canada, Australia, and the United States, in addition to Switzerland and the European Union, make up the great majority of nations penalising Russia.

That data also supports one of the most surprising aspects of the sanctions regimes thus far: that European countries, which have traditionally been reluctant of applying penalties, have led the way, even surpassing the US in several circumstances. One example, according to senior officials, was the decision to remove some Russian banks from the Swift financial messaging system, a move that the US initially resisted.

The sanctions, according to President Putin, are comparable to a declaration of war.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday that the US and its allies are looking "at the idea of blocking the import of Russian oil in a coordinated approach, while ensuring that there is still an acceptable supply of oil on international markets."

On Monday, Russia threatened that if the West went through and banned Russian oil, it would shut off its main gas pipeline to Germany.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, such a move would have "catastrophic consequences" for world supplies and would double the price of oil to $300 per barrel.

The US has been exploring a potential ban with allies as a way of punishing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. But Germany and the Netherlands rejected the plan on Monday.

The EU gets about 40% of its gas and 30% of its oil from Russia, and has no easy substitutes if supplies are disrupted.

Mr Novok said Russia has every right to retaliate, and pointed to Germany's decision last month to block certification for the second Nord Stream pipeline between the two countries.
